NEW YORK: UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon on Friday expressed serious concern over the recent clashes at the Torkham crossing point between Pakistan and Afghanistan, and appealed to the two countries to resolve their differences through dialogue.
Responding to a question at the regular briefing in New York, secretary-general’s spokesman Stephane Dujarric said that the UN chief was very concerned over the tensions along the Pak-Afghan border and called for calm and restraint. As regards the millions of Afghan refugees in Pakistan, he praised the Pakistani generosity in hosting them, but said they could not be sent back to their strife-torn homeland against their will.
There should be strict adherence to international laws and conventions, he added. On Monday, the Pakistan Army has moved heavy weaponry and additional troops to the Afghan border after the death of an army officer after being shot by Afghan forces in a clash across Torkham border.
